2008 Webbys

As usual, it's been a huge amount of time since we've said anything publicly, but yesterday we got some great news: we were alerted that we'd been recognized as 2008 Webby Award Honorees for our work on Emdashes.

Congratulations go out to Emily and Jesse as well. The recognition is as much theirs as ours.

true military wives and butch

Quick newsbite today: we've launched True Military Wives Confessions for Romi Lassally, redesigned Butch swimwear for Juliano Corbetta, and crowned the Most Embarrassing Latino for Daniel Mauser.

Romi's a former Huffington Post editor and produces films in her spare time. True Military Wives Confessions is her project which allows military wives to vent anonymously. The interesting thing about this site is that despite its anonymity, it's not catty at all. This was picked up in USA Today last week.

Butch, Juliano's swimwear label, is back for the 2008 season. this year we've expanded upon the identity and site we built last year by adding a video component and two new galleries.

And lastly, this morning, we concluded a PR event we created for Guanabee to garner a bit more notice in the national latino press. All our best to Miss Jessica Alba! She's awesomest!

two months off

As it usually means on the web, when we go silent, we're doing something interesting.

We've redesigned and rebuilt Pentagram's website with a brand new content management system backing it up. Pentagram's been a valuable friend to us over the past few years, and we're really pleased they gave us the opportunity to do this.

Since the last post, we've seen our favorite intern, Agent Where The Hell's That Kid With My Latte, head off back to school to finish his degree. Godspeed, Jonathan, and bring us a case of Dr. Enuf back from Tennessee. He'll be back up north soon enough.

Art Fag City is a quick project we completed for Paddy Johnson. Paddy's trying to bring art criticism to net art, and we've made her the site with which to do it. Typographically, it's as much of a piss-take as net art is: we've designed it tongue in cheek with the same typographic styling as the MoMA. This is our first work inside Wordpress, and I have to say: we're sticking with Movable Type as our content management system of choice.

Speaking of Movable Type, Su's been working closely with the development community to help bring the newest version online, which happened very recently.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we're going to go silent for a little while longer again. Hopefully not two months this time.

week of june 10-16, 2007

another week come and gone, and new things all around.

first and most importantly, a warm welcome is in order for our newest intern, young jonathan depriest (who's going to kill us for linking to his website without asking). jonathan's fresh out of my own alma mater, university of tennessee at knoxville.

jonathan's learning the ropes here by creating ad campaigns for guanabee, which we recently designed for our friends at exacto media, and adding his own hand to our next upcoming poster pressing, soon to join ranks with the blushing cockerel.

we have yet to figure out what jonathan's in-house nickname should be, but su's leaning towards "where the hell's that kid with my latte," even though su doesn't like coffee. i like it; it lends a certain dictatorial poetry.

in other developments, jezebel, which we designed for gawker media, was their strongest launch under very little press focus, which bodes well for the further stability of online publishing. jezebel recently had the strongest week of any new gawker publication so recently after launch. gawker will soon be moving offices in manhattan to a new space better equipped to hold the 20 or so fulltimers they now employ.

we're growing quickly ourselves, with several larger projects in the works. but before that happens, we have several new small launches happening soon, and we'll unveil those shortly.

broads and tequila

so, despite the general wisdom of not launching on a friday, and probably less so after a party sponsored by a tequila maker, guanabee went public june 1st. this is the flagship title from a brand new weblog company called exacto media, based in manhattan.

just before that, earlier in the week, we finished branding for gawker's jezebel. needless to say, it's a wee bit on the slutty side. but it's okay, you know? there's room for everyone in this studio.

the datevine launches

<a href="http://www.thedatevine.com/" target="_blank"">the datevine is a great little site which gaby darbyshire launched a few days ago.

if you're out of good ideas for great things to do, the datevine's turning into a rather sizeable repository of places, times, and dates. good ones, too.

i did a quick interface for her, just some elegant typography with color, really. the site's put built by brice dunwoodie, who's also responsible for <a href="http://www.cmswire.com/" target="_blank"">cms wire.

if you put all of our names together, the interesting thing about their combination is that we all pull time for gawker media. :)

print receives national magazine award

many at print have been close friends to us over the years, including editor joyce rutter-kaye, managing editor emily gordon (for whom we designed emdashes, where she blogs the crap out of the new yorker), our own editor caitlin dover.

ars nova launches

late friday night, we relaunched arsnovanyc.com for new york's feisty ars nova theatre. this is a project that's been in the works since september of last year, and would never have been completed without valuable input from ars nova's jillian apfelbaum, teresa bass, and chris sauvé.

the design is a partnership between chris and myself---chris had worked online before, but only in a flash-based setting, so it was my responsibility to take his rough sketches, then design with him to redevelop them in a way that responsibly calls attention to the work---not the medium. we redrew his sketch into a series of translucent panels, looking through the theatre company into the work itself. the entire site is run via a content management system, including the media players. this means ars nova can update their content without worrying so much about upsetting the design.

ars nova is the subject of an extensive profile in today's new york times theater section. if you don't have a nytimes.com login, you may download the article as a PDF file by clicking here. it's a great read for young directors looking for new financial models.

Infanstyle launches today

infanstyle, launched this morning, joins the growing number of designer-run sites for childrens' goods. it's owned by shamar and geoff brossard (and their two kids). we met the brossards years ago when geoff and i created an installation for hewitt associates' visitor center together.

infanstyle is the first time we've built a shop from scratch, and i think it worked out pretty well. we gave the brossards a customized shopping cart, a new custom typeface, illustration, and design. keep tabs on the shop every couple of months---we've designed and illustrated it so that it'll change with the seasons. we also anticipate building a storyline around the mascot.
